When Beachgoers Fled Violence, Popular Picture Captures Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, heard loud noises echoing around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. She left her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear trouble had occurred.

While standing on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone coming up behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that all the others was trying to escape from, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He moved into something that surely every part of you would signal you to move in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews attending to numerous the injured.

Local Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the community, with the beach facility beside the site of the violence serving as a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as going into the ocean to assist people who were struggling.

Following the attack, comments of support circulated widely. One post conveyed appreciation for the lifeguards who exhibited that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The group of rescuers published a statement, explaining they were “processing what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and encouragement. We are touched by the kindness for our team,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it aids those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the incident started until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a council representative.

“These individuals show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores safe for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and process the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
