Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the substance was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior official said the vandalism left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
