Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
