Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
