The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
