Plans for Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city during the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised strong concerns regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside External Festivities

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the stadium.

“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience beyond the match venue,” stated a committee representative.

Legal Background of Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Symbols

The international federation holds operational control over match venues during games. While its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
