Kat Abughazaleh, an left-leaning candidate for Congress, faces federal charges over charges stemming from her participation in demonstrations outside an ICE processing facility in the vicinity of Chicago last fall.

The Federal Charges

Federal court documents, submitted recently, allege this 26-year old Palestinian American political figure and five other individuals “physically hindered and impeded” an officer who was “compelled to proceed very slowly” to prevent harm to the protesters.

The candidate, campaigning for Illinois’s ninth congressional district, faces counts of conspiracy to forcibly impede or injure a federal agent as well as assaulting or impeding the agent during the execution of their duties.

Claims of Obstruction

As stated in court papers, those involved “conspired with one another and others” to stop through intimidation and force, a federal law enforcement officer, from discharging the duties of his office.

Prosecutors claim that Abughazaleh, together with the group, “struck forcefully” on the officer’s car, “gathered closely around the front and side” of the car and also “pressed on the car to block its progress”.

According to the indictment that the group etched the word “pig” on to the vehicle and broke a side mirror and a rear windshield wiper.

It also alleged that Abughazaleh specifically “joined the crowd at the front of the government vehicle”, and, placing her hands on the hood, leaned against the vehicle while remaining directly in the path of the vehicle, obstructing and blocking the agent.

Response from the Candidate

After the charges were filed, the congressional candidate, who is known for her large social media platform, called the indictment “a politically motivated case”.

“This represents a blatant effort to suppress dissent, a right guaranteed by the First Amendment. This case is yet another attempt by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish those who dare to speak up. That is the reason I will contest these unfair allegations,” she stated.

She continued: “While we were practicing our First Amendment rights, immigration officers have struck, pulled, thrown, fired pepper balls at, and used tear gas on numerous demonstrators, including me. Simply because we had the gall to say masked men abducting our neighbors and terrorizing our community cannot be the new normal.

“This case targets our rights to protest, speak freely, and associate with anyone who disagrees with this government … I’ve spent my career fighting America’s backwards slide towards fascism and I’m not going to give up now,” she continued.

Broader Context

The charges emerge amid increased federal immigration operations in various left-leaning cities such as Chicago – a move which has been harshly criticized by local and state leaders.

The raids have drawn widespread opposition from the public, congressional Democratic lawmakers and civil rights groups, with the ACLU describing them as a “build out of a national paramilitary policing force that could be used to … consolidate President Donald Trump’s power”.
