New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in March.
