Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
