Grief as Renowned South African DJ Gunned Down in the City of Johannesburg.
A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the forty-year-old media personality was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose behind the shooting has not been established and no arrests are in custody, police said.
How It Happened
Police said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a premises close to the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the site managing the setup of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, it was reported.
"Authorities believe the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.
Security camera video reportedly captured a individual with dreadlocks and wearing what resembled a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but collapsed across the street.
Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the assault.
Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.
