However, polls for this council have witnessed a notable absence in substantive competing voices against a backdrop of major systemic overhauls in the past few years.
Following the 1997 handover, a model of "one nation, two systems" was established, vowing that Hong Kong would retain a degree of independence. Gradually, analysts argue that civil liberties have been increasingly eroded.
Major Milestones and Reforms
During 2014, a proposal was introduced that would have allow residents to choose the city's leader. Critically, any such election was confined to candidates vetted by central authorities.
In 2019 was marked by widespread unrest, culminating in an episode where residents accessed the legislative complex to demonstrate against a proposed legal amendment.
The Effect of the Security Legislation
Enacted in 2020, the National Security Law handed new legal tools to central authorities over Hong Kong's governance. Conduct such as secession were made illegal. Following this law, the primary opposition organization disbanded.
Today's Electoral System
The council polls are considered Hong Kong's main democratic exercise. Nevertheless, regulations established in the past few years now stipulate that only candidates deemed loyal are permitted to run for office.
