Correctional Facilities Cannot Be Resolved Immediately, Minister Says, while Law Enforcement Hunt For Two Individuals Incorrectly Freed
Opposition justice spokesperson Robert Jenrick has labeled the situation as a "complete and utter mess," commenting this morning.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he pointed to comments made by David Lammy after a previous inmate discharge, saying that the minister would implement more robust verifications.
"There was a delay of six days for the corrections department supposedly to realize this has happened" and notify the authorities, Jenrick explains, "leaving them a week late in the manhunt to locate him."
The opposition figure condemns Lammy's performance during yesterday's parliamentary questions and accuses him of a "total dereliction of duty."
Speaking about mistaken prison releases more generally, Jenrick underlines that "each mistaken release [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were such releases under the former administration, but says the number "has risen significantly" under Labour.
Calling for more prisons to be built, he continues: "What the British people want to see now are adequate checks put in place."
"This represents a specific bureaucratic error by the Ministry of Justice supervised by David Lammy," the opposition member concludes.
