An extensive industrial complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is addressing nuclear pollution after an official team detected presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants within the site, that includes companies shipping chilled marine products.

Urgent Measures and Product Recall

The finding has led to immediate cleanup operations and the relocation of local inhabitants, following a similar contamination alert in the US that was traced back to the Indonesian plants.

An important international store chain is among the businesses that have withdrawn products from its shelves after the discovery.

Probe and Discovery of Pollution

Indonesian officials initiated an investigation after the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled coated shrimp exported by an Indonesian company.

Officials released an warning instructing suppliers and sellers to dispose of the goods and not sell it, even though the detected level was well under the authority's intervention limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an acute risk to consumers.

The authority stated: “The primary impact on health of worry following extended, repeated low dose exposure (eg through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an increased risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Health Examinations

Radioactivity scans showed at least 22 plants in the industrial zone were affected. The official taskforce did not identify the twenty-one other production facilities, but said they would immediately undergo cleanup procedures carried out by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official stated that residents living in strongly contaminated areas would be relocated until the location was cleaned, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.

Medical authorities additionally conducted examinations on nearby workers and residents located close to the manufacturing zone, finding nine individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to return home.

Decontamination and Isolation Plans

The contaminated sites will immediately receive decontamination procedures by the national atomic energy agency. Officials have further selected the area of a recycled metal factory as an isolation center for contaminated materials.

Indonesia, which has no nuclear energy facilities or weapons programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas.

Origin of Pollution and Import Restrictions

A taskforce spokesperson told the media that scrap metal imports were the likely cause of pollution and confirmed the authorities would promptly impose restrictions on metal waste imports. He said that vehicles were also being inspected for potential contamination as they traveled through the area.

Regarding Caesium-137 and Health Risks

Caesium-137 is a hazardous nuclear isotope that usually appears in the ecosystem as a consequence of atomic experiments or incidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chornobyl. Trace quantities are found in earth, products and the atmosphere.

The amount detected in the frozen shrimp was much less than regulatory intervention levels, but the authority explained prolonged exposure to even low doses of caesium was associated to an elevated risk of the disease.

The withdrawn shrimp was sold at major store locations across at least a dozen American states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
