"When are you speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Several high-profile fans have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos frequently show them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
