A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
